National level workshop on Ensuring the Safety of Women Migrant workers by promoting Right to Information, 20th November 2015

MAG in coordination with SAWF organized a national level workshop at The Union House with a total of 35 participants including the MAG team. With the support of SAWF, MAG had been working to link RTI with women migrant worker.  Due to the lack of access to relevant information, the migrant workers specially the women were found to be  more vulnerable to exploitation as severe as rape and abuses in the destination country and most were also found to have suffered humiliation in own country after return.

Most of the migrant workers are not aware of the legal provisions, state’s rules & policies regarding migration and the migrant workers. Though Nepal adopted RTI Act (Right to Information) in 2007, people are still unaware of this fundamental right that safeguards and guarantees their right and access over any relevant public & administrative information. From the workshops at Sindupalchowk and Nuwakot, it was attained that people knew about safe foreign employment but had no information on RTI Act of Nepal. Hence, it pushed forth the need to discuss more about RTI and foreign employment in the local level.

As MAG acknowledged the need for a collaborative effort between Government and development partners to ensure safety of women migrants by creating awareness among the people by using Right to Information; MAG organized the national level workshop to further discuss the way forward in ensuring safe migration through the use of RTI.
