In recent years, Nepal has made notable progress in recognizing and safeguarding the rights of its LGBTQI community. Nonetheless, challenges such as discrimination, harassment, and violence persist, often intensified by limited media representation and understanding. To address these issues, the Media Advocacy Group ( MAG ) , in collaboration with the Journalism Initiative on Gender-Based Violence (JiG), organized a two-day Basic Journalism and Gender-Based Violence Training. Held on May 9th and 10th, 2024, at the Media Advocacy Group Office in Thapathali Height, Kathmandu, this training aimed to empower LGBTQI individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective journalism and advocacy. Participants, drawn from diverse backgrounds within the LGBTQI community, engaged in interactive sessions, workshops, and discussions, fostering a supportive environment for sharing experiences and building solidarity. The training sought to achieve several objectives: equipping participants with essential journalism skills—such as writing, reporting, interviewing, and fact-checking—to enable them to tell their own stories and advocate for their rights; providing a comprehensive understanding of gender-based violence (GBV), including its definitions, prevalence, and impact; and empowering individuals to report on GBV issues with accuracy and sensitivity, ensuring the well-being and rights of survivors.
