In contemporary Nepali society, the media wields significant influence over public discourse, perceptions, and information dissemination. Despite its crucial role, the representation of women leaders in Nepali media remains disproportionately low compared to their male counterparts. This disparity not only reflects deep-seated gender biases but also perpetuates systemic inequalities, impeding progress towards gender parity in leadership roles. Recent panel discussions organized by the Media Advocacy Group (MAG) and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Nepal have underscored this issue. On June 2024, a distinguished panel Discussion on Visibility of Women Leadership in Media was convened at Yak Palace in Lalitpur, Nepal. The event brought together esteemed panelists to address the media’s insufficient coverage of women leaders, despite women holding 33% of the House of Representatives and key roles across various sectors. The discussion highlighted the critical need for media to amplify diverse narratives of women leaders, as the current lack of coverage not only hinders individual career advancement but also perpetuates gender stereotypes and biases. The panel emphasized the importance of gender-responsive media practices and explored strategies to enhance visibility and recognition for women leaders. The event provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, share experiences, and outline actionable strategies to overcome existing challenges. Moving forward, collaborative efforts from media organizations and policymakers will be essential to ensure equitable visibility and empowerment of women in leadership roles, fostering a more inclusive and representative media landscape.
